An artist book handmade by Czar Kristoff, To Destroy Is To Build is a collection of screenshots from demolition videos found on Instagram. The project explores the idea of monumentalizing the destruction of institution as a form of reclamation of space and power.
In the recent years, Instagram has been a platform for many of us to disseminate our personal and collective luxuries through still and moving images. If we think about documentation as monuments, the act of posting online somehow resembles a ceremony, to celebrate the monument. To Destroy Is To Build examines a series of videos of building demolition I Kristoff found on the app. But whose luxury is it? Whose monument are we celebrating?
The book is laser printed on mimeo ground paper, with fastener binding, acetate film in recto and verso, self-published, edition of 15.
